As many of you know, Jared and I are tying the knot after 11 years! And as you’ve probably seen so far (follow the IG/twitter hashtag #edytaandjared) that we aren’t the traditional type :) Yep, I’m in the business of weddings and as of late 2012, Jared has entered it. I frequent them often and have a special place in my heart for them. But of course after photographing so many and telling Jared all about them, we’ve realized what works for us as a couple. Jared and I have some of the bestest friends you could ever ask for. Seriously. They are the family one chooses, and we absolutely believe that. After lots of conversations, we decided to not have an official bridal party. Ok I’ll share our reasons, but these are our reasons why and by no means is there a right or wrong people! 1. We wanted everyone coming to our ‘wedding vacation’ (destination with super small guest list) to have a balls out blast with no strings attached, 2. We’re in our 30s, been together for many years so it’s more about the celebrations than the traditions for us, 3. Avoiding wedding dramas. However, we still wanted our closest closest to feel special and to know that all our wedding festivities (leading up to and day-of) wouldn’t be the same without them! And the diy air plant secret message packet was born! The perfect token was mailed to our bestest to compliment our Palm Springs wedding! See more on how we did it… (more…)
Yep! The little birdie, fly on the wall, grapevine, word on the street was right – Jared and I are officially engaged! Late April means 11 years since our first date. Time sure does fly :) Never in a rush, we explored the world and strived for greatness all while supporting each other. Timing just feels right now. So here we are! I know you want to hear about the behind the scenes :) Well, we are definitely romantic in our own way and aren’t really keen on the ‘standard’ or ‘traditional’ so I told him not to get down on one knee. Ever. Or to have the pressure of buying the perfect ring – we’ve been together for 11 years, why not do it together!? We’ve talked for months regarding wedding day details (I’m in the industry duh!) and we basically mapped out the feeling of our big day before any official engagement. It happened one night, laying in bed doing our normal chit-chat routine, we decided to ask each other. Casual, cuddly and emotionally charged as we both asked each other, “will you marry me?”. Perfection.
And of course, we had to think of a unique way to let our family and friends know. A call, text and social media announcement just wasn’t going to cut it for us ;) We were inspired by the word search puzzles. So we designed, crafted away (hired some amazing people to help us) and snail mailed a anonymous surprise message via a word search puzzle as the sole way for everyone to find out our news. Keeping a secret like this for 10 DAYS is incredibly hard – especially when you have fun social things planned with the ones you love. But we did it! I want to give Ryanne Steele a HUGE MEGA thanks for the fantastic calligraphy on our envelopes. She’s an emerging calligraphy talent and went over the moon to get these to us in time. You can find some of her work on IG @steelemyheart and please email me info(at)edytaszyszlo.com for her direct contact info. Her website is still in the works. Enjoy the images, I hope you find them inspirational and fun! And yes, this was mostly a diy so I’ll include some tips at the end of the post. (more…)

I’ve seen 2 of the 3 pictured ‘good things’ happen at the end of 2011 but boy-oh-boy I can’t wait to see more of all three of these excellent ideas! Who wouldn’t love a neon sign custom made for their wedding day! Move over spotlight initials on the dance floor and hello neon sign by the cake (or wherever you’d like)! Pretty color coordinated silk scarves tied around the bridesmaids bouquets, yes please! A super lovely gift that can be used right away, trust me, the ladies will love them. And last but not least, watercolor! It’s a timeless affect with trend power. Handmade painting love for your save the date, invitation, place cards or menus oh my! See how one of my brides incorporated it here. Find out more info and how-tos for the above ideas by clicking on the above link ;)
Whew! This past weekend my bff flew into SF for a girlie bachelorette weekend! I was a bit disgusted when hunting for fun props for her to wear on her big night out…even searched Etsy. So what did this maid-of-honor-who-loves-crafting do?! I made one of course! I wanted it to scream fun and girlie not veils and body parts (catching my drift). Here’s a rough and quick how-to for a diy bachelorette badge! (more…)
Woweee my friend Leah turned thirty! It’s the busiest time of year for weddings/photoshoots and there’s lots of celebrating as well! So very excited to FINALLY talk about this surprise birthday party that I’ve been co-planning for months! We just returned this past weekend from quite the little diy bash. My bff from college, Leah, lives 2000 miles away from me, and she thought I had to photograph a wedding on her 30th birthday. Little did she know that her fiance and I had a little something up our sleeves! She had no idea that my man, myself and her Minnesota based family were going to be there with tons of food, diy decor and cheer! It all started with an invitation… (more…)
Seems like a minor detail right? Definitely not. While it’s not a make or break-it project for your party or wedding, it can make a difference in your event photos. Whether you’re the creative type (haha) or not, this is one easy way to spruce up your table centerpiece from the mundane (and distracting really) paper/photo on a tall metal holder. No matter what your budget, table numbers and cards can be cute, themed and add dimension to your centerpiece. They should be a compliment to the centerpiece not a distraction. There are hundreds of ideas so start at the Pinterest link above and check out my favorite real wedding table number here (Italian house numbers). Feel free to share your ideas!
While traveling a few days ago, I had some time to catch up on my favorite reading: Martha Stewart Weddings! How adorable is this scratch-off save the date? So easy, brilliant really, and would be perfect for an invitation as well! Oh MS craft team, how genius you are. See the how-to instructions at the link above.
Lots of ideas I’m loving these days but playful and action based save the dates and invitations are my absolute favorite right now! Whether it inflates, spins, floats or hangs, your guests will be in awe over the whimsical interaction! The spinning one above is actually a diy project with printable pdfs. Click link above. Last weekend was delightfully eventful! I flew to Chicago to photograph a fun wedding and threw our dear friends the best.baby.shower.ever! (Remember their diy paper pop-up invitations?) I’m still bowing down to the best little helper friends a girl could ask for! Without your help, this could not have happened. The day was full of love, laughter, gourmet potluck goodies, handmade details and rain while cozing up fireside at Suzanne Cummings Flowers. Nat and Jeff, Cheers to your first little baby kiwi girl! You and her will be loved forever, from Auntie Edyta. (more…)
